Are there any Polish Guerrilla Girls? Socially engaged artistic practices in contemporary Poland?

Ein Seminar von Dr. Weronika Kobylińska-Bunsch

January 2020. Karol Radziszewski (b. 1980), one of the most important Polish artists who use archive-based strategy in order to create a narrative focused on the gender references, is harassed by the Polish national television. A few months later, March. Karolina Gembara (b. 1981) - who is a Polish pioneer in running participatory photography workshops for migrants - receives a mandate from the municipal police for attending a manifestation against restricting women's rights. Artists such as Karolina Gembara, Michał Łuczak, Cecylia Malik, Rafał Milach, Karol Radziszewski, or Agnieszka Rayss - create in various media and formats. However, all of them combine in their daily practice: art and social activism. Each of their artistic steps and personal decisions proof that they all strongly believe that art can (and should) make an attempt to change the status quo. During the course, we will analyze and reconsider various examples of contemporary artistic practices that share the same belief: that art can try to make a difference. However, let us remind ourselves, that already in 1980s Lucy Lippard argued that feminist art was "a value system, a revolutionary strategy, a way of life". Bearing this definition in mind, we should ask ourselves: is this concept of art actually present on the Polish art scene? Moreover: how to write about strategies, which not only have a certain political and/or social aspect but which innovative force was also focused on expanding the definition of art through the incorporation of new media and new perspectives? Together we will confront those questions while discussing various pieces from different fields of art (feminist art, interactive art, political art, and street art, among others).
