Museums in the classroom and classroom activities at museums. How to teach foreign languages using the object-based learning approach

Gastvortrag von Dr. Katarzyna Žák-Caplot (Warschau) am Donnerstag, dem 12. November 2026, von 12:00 bis 14:00 Uhr im HS E028, Ernst-Abbe-Platz 8, 07743 Jena

How can museum objects become effective tools for foreign language teaching? This presentation explores the potential of Object-Based Learning (OBL) as an engaging and innovative approach to language education, both in the classroom and in museum settings. It will present several months-long educational projects carried out at the Museum of Warsaw as quasi-experimental studies conducted within the framework of an implementation doctorate entitled Integrated Teaching of Polish as a Foreign Language in a Museum Environment. Drawing on these practical experiences, the presentation will demonstrate how museum objects and collections can support language acquisition, stimulate communication, and foster intercultural competence. Particular attention will be given to practical teaching strategies and the potential of museum-based learning to create meaningful, interactive, and culturally rich language learning experiences.
