The lecture will be devoted to variable representations of violence in Polish literature of the late 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. These representations can be told in three stages. In the first stage, literature presents violence as an aspect of modernity. The criticism carried out by the novels becomes the founding act for excluding violence and for establishing a minority democracy, i.e. one that gives citizenship rights to minorities (thus eliminating differences between norm and difference). In the second stage, literature shows capitalism as a new discrimination system, eliminating all existing collective entities (primarily social classes and the nation); in response to discrimination, there are acts of violence against mid-level / caliber capitalism agents. These acts are accompanied by attempts to restore collective entities and create majority democracy. In the third stage, violence becomes part of projects to change the political system. The condition of a change is the creation of new collective identities and inclusion of violence into democracy.

Prof. Przemysław Czapliński (geb. 1962), einer der wichtigsten zeitgenössischen Literaturkritiker und -historiker in Polen, Essayist und Übersetzer. Dozent an der Adam-Mickiewicz-Universität in Poznań (UAM). Mitbegründer des Instituts für Anthropologie der Literatur an der UAM. Für seine Werke wurde er bereits mit dem Kościelski-Preis und dem Kazimierz-Wyka-Preis ausgezeichnet.

Die Veranstaltung ist Teil der Veranstaltungsreihe „Rechtsruck in Europa? Die polnischen Perspektiven", die Studierende auch mit zusätzlichen Veranstaltugnen als Blockseminar belegen können.
